Sensitivity to Thoron on Passive Radon Detectors

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Although a lot of studies on radon have been done for a long time, there are few reports on thoron. It was considered that the presence of thoron could be negligible because of its own quantity compared to that of radon. However, recent studies have shown high thoron levels in our living environment (1-4). In particular, high thoron concentrations were occasionally observed in some areas, Japan (1,2). This fact made it clear that some of passive radon detectors were sensitive to the presence of thoron. They are commonly used for indoor radon surveys. It is possible that such detectors will give false values unless they are placed properly. Therefore, it is important to understand the detector response to thoron before practical use. A compact thoron chamber system was set up for the purpose. In this study, the followings are shown: configuration of the thoron chamber and sensitivity to thoron of several passive radon detectors.

Comparative Measurements of Radon Concentration in Soil Using Passive and Active Methods in High Level Natural Radiation Area (HLNRA) of Ramsar
Background: Radon and its daughters are amongst the most important sources of natural exposure in the world. Soil is one of the significant sources of radon/thoron due to both radium and thorium so that the emanated thoron from it may cause increased uncertainties in radon measurements. Recently, a diffusion chamber has been designed and optimized for passive discriminative measurements of rado...
متن کاملA simulation study of radon and thoron discrimination problem in case-control studies.
In most countries, radon is the dominant contributor among natural radiation sources to the radiation exposure dose of the general population. Numerous case-control studies of residential radon and lung cancer have been conducted using passive radon (Rn-222) detectors. These studies showed that radon may increase lung cancer risk, but most of them did not show a significant risk. Recently it wa...
متن کاملInfluence of environmental changes on integrating radon detectors: results of an intercomparison exercise.
An intercomparison exercise for passive integrating radon detectors has been carried out with the participation of 12 detection systems from 10 laboratories. The detection systems comprise three commonly used in radon integrating measurements, tracks, activated charcoal canisters and electrets. The exposures were carried out in the radon and thoron chambers at the Institute of Energy Techniques...
متن کاملComparative analysis of radon, thoron and thoron progeny concentration measurements
This study examined correlations between radon, thoron and thoron progeny concentrations based on surveys conducted in several different countries. For this purpose, passive detectors developed or modified by the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) were used. Radon and thoron concentrations were measured using passive discriminative radon-thoron detectors. Thoron progeny measurem...
متن کاملCalibration and optimization of a low cost diffusion chamber for passive separated measurements of radon and thoron in soil by Lexan PC SSNTD
Background: Separate radon and thoron measurements in soil are very important in assessment of internal exposure due to inhalation of such radioactive gases. Materials and Methods: In this study, a low cost, small size, passive diffusion chamber has been developed for simple measurement of Radon-222 and Radon-220(Thoron) gases separately in soil. The diffusion chamber consists of two films and ...
